Posada Bosque Encantado is a three-room garden guesthouse in the heart of San Marcos La Laguna, near the shores of Lake Atitlán, Guatemala. More than a place to sleep, it's a living sanctuary — built by hand from adobe, stone, and local wood in the Maya building tradition, surrounded by lush gardens alive with sounds of nature.
The posada was created by Terry Rubin, a musician and community pioneer who arrived in San Marcos over three decades ago as one of the earliest foreign settlers in the village. Now 78 years old, Terry has spent a lifetime building bridges between cultures — supporting Maya families, sitting on local advisory boards, attending indigenous community meetings, and is one of the better known figures in San Marcos. Her warmth and integrity are woven into every corner of Bosque Encantado. If the timing is right, Terry may even share a song or two with you!
Each of the three rooms features a private bathroom with an instant gas hot water heater for a great shower, thoughtful furnishings, and a sense of grounded simplicity. The property includes a fully equipped guest kitchen, covered patios with hammocks, and gardens where you can read, journal, or simply breathe.
On the grounds, you'll also find Ruk'u'x Ulew — Heart of the Earth — a small women's cacao production space where Guatemalan grown cacao is processed using traditional methods. It's a living example of the culture that surrounds you here.
The garden itself is a sanctuary: lush plants, flowering trees, hummingbirds, and a Maya altar in the form of a Maya calendar where you may be inspired to discover your nawal, your Maya birth sign.. Quiet hours begin at 10 PM, and the atmosphere is one of restful, unhurried peace.
Whether you're a solo traveler, a couple, a family, or a digital nomad looking for a calm base, you'll find a genuine home here — three minutes from the lake, one minute from cafés, and a world away. With nine years as an Airbnb Superhost and 592+ five-star reviews, our guests keep coming back. We hope you will too.
